1, measuring speed
For some cables, the speed of the wave propagation is unknown and must be determined by testing. As long as we know the full length of the cable, we can test the speed of the wave propagation in the cable.
In the “Test Method” menu, select “Measure Speed” and select “0.2μS” or “2μS” according to the length of the cable, generally 0.2μS for 500m or less. After typing the full length of the cable, press the “Sampling” button to adjust the “Displacement” and “Amplitude” knobs so that the amplitude and baseline of the signal are in an easy-to-view position.
Move the cursor to the falling edge of the low-voltage pulse and press “Position”, then move the cursor to the leading edge of the reflected signal, and the speed of the wave in the cable can be displayed on the screen. If the transmitted and received waveforms are too close, press the “Extended” button to expand the waveform before calculating.
2, measuring fault
In the “Test Mode” menu, select “Fault Detection” and select the appropriate pulse width. Press “Sampling” and the screen will display the fault waveform.
The reflected signal of the open circuit fault has the same polarity as the transmitted pulse, and the reflected signal of the short circuit fault is opposite to the polarity of the transmitted pulse.
